Big K.R.I.T. seems like he's been a part of the hip-hop scene for much longer than he has. His attention to detail has given him the edge over a long list of up-and-coming artists who believe in quantity over quality. The producer-rapper has never been one to "drop a mixtape" anyway. His first, 2009's 'K.R.I.T. Wuz Here,' and the 2011 sophomore effort, 'ReturnOf4Eva,' are projects in his eyes. Yet, neither was quite a mixtape nor official album. But both showcased his effort in crafting classic material. Signed to Def Jam for two years now, the Mississippi native has been plugging away, working on tracks with everyone from Freddie Gibbs to T.I. 'ReturnOf4Eva' was his first release after being signed and it's been helmed as one of 2011's best mixtapes. He's primed to repeat that success as he readies his '4EvaNADay' project for release next month. K.R.I.T.'s debut LP, 'Live From the Underground,' is next up for release in June and though he sounds confident about what he has planned, the rapper remains tight-lipped about the specifics. He does, however, promise that we'll be getting more of what made us fall in love with his music in the first place. The BoomBox sat down with the man born Justin Scott about producing for his hip-hop colleagues, playing the tuba and his appreciation for Waka Flocka Flame.

Are you aware that you're one of Waka's favorite new artists? He mentioned you excitedly in an interview with us last year and mentioned a track that he had set up for you on his new album, 'Triple F Life: Friends, Fans & Family.' I definitely saw that interview. Yeah, I did [laughs]. I'm definitely gonna work with him but this new project ['4EvaNADay'], doesn't really have any features on it. It's more of a conceptual album. As far as my actual 'Live From The Underground' project dropping, I really can't say who's gonna be on there because I definitely want to keep the mystique. But I'm definitely gonna work with Waka, man. I respect his grind and what he's been able to accomplish, so for him to show love and give me a shout-out in the midst of everything man, I definitely appreciate it.

So you had no idea he was such a big fan. Nah, man. I haven't really had the opportunity to be around him. That was the first that I'd heard and to see it in an interview was just crazy.

Even though the 25-year-old rapper has lent his talents to heavyweights like T.I. and The Roots and even placed ahead of rock god Mick Jagger on Rolling Stone's "Top 50 Albums of 2011," he sounds more concerned with the unifying powers of music and standing up for his beliefs.

Justin Ivey: Another year, another #1 free album for Big K.R.I.T. The Mississippi emcee/producer stole the show once again with Return Of 4Eva, the follow-up to his breakthrough K.R.I.T. Wuz Here. After releasing the very dope Digital Dan LP in the spring, Nemo Achida showed he was holding onto some even better material on his album Nemotional. THURZ broke away from his U-N-I roots to show a politically-driven side which resulted in easily the best work to date from the West Coast emcee. Supreme INK caught my attention with “DeepSeaGumpShrimpin” and proved they were well worth that hype with their project Sell It To Me Free. Illogic dug into the vaults to present the world with a previously unreleased collaboration with producer Walter Rocktight that was originally intended to be distributed on Rhymesayers back in 2006. The line between mixtapes and “free albums” is blurry of course, but we look at it simply as the way the artist presents the project. If the artist identifies their project as an album and there’s no DJ or jacked instrumentals involved, then it’s not a mixtape to us.

The Good: Big K.R.I.T.’s authenticity is undeniable. There is nothing in Return of 4eva that’s sound fake, or forced. The intense emotion on “Dreamin’” and “American Rapstar” strike a chord with the listener that captivates and swallows them whole. When R4 is spinning, you are Big K.R.I.T. and his life becomes yours as he demonstrates his successful, multi-faceted approach to rap in just about every song. It's the Mississippi twang that sets R4 apart from the rest of this year’s releases.

The Bad: "Bad" is such a strong word, but the weaker songs on Return of 4eva are simply the ones that aren’t great enough to stand out. “Amtrak,” for instance has a great beat, but K.R.I.T.’s soulful lyrics don’t quite do it justice. Additionally, “Highs and Lows” is another record that’s smooth and introspective, but becomes skippable in the context of the rest of the album. You're bound to have fluctuation when there's over 20 songs on the menu.

The Lovely: Overall, R4 is an intense, thought-provoking experience that gels with the listener right out of the gate. His versatility is unmatched, proven by the complex verses laid over perfect, mood-setting beats, all done by K.R.I.T. himself. And despite a few unneeded songs, Krizzle shows his musical growth from 2010’s K.R.I.T. Wuz Here as his lyrics and sound have been refined for future takeovers. -- Raj

Steven "Steve-O" Brown asks this while scrolling through potential cover options for Big K.R.I.T.'s upcoming mixtape, "4 Eva N A Day," slated to drop in January. The covers differ slightly but the three guys on the email -- Steve-O (K.R.I.T.'s marketing manager), K.R.I.T., and his manager and president of hip-hop label Cinematic Music Group, Jonny Shipes -- want to make sure to pick the perfect one before pushing it out themselves.

Steve-O handles the rapper's marketing; specifically, digital. He's in charge of the roll-out of K.R.I.T.'s projects and connects for premieres with different outlets, like Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and more. Steve-O's also co-founder of the Smoker's Club tour (alongside Shipes) and co-founder of marketing and management company GFCnewyork (alongside "Saint" Louis). Steve-O handles marketing, management and A&R development for artists like Mickey Factz, Smoke DZA, Jesse Boykins III, Mara Hruby, MeLo-X, FKi, and Nakim.

Billboard met up with Steve-O for lunch at Sarita's Macaroni & Cheese (S'Mac) yesterday (Dec. 11), when Steve-O had just wrapped up a hectic week. It's a familiar pace for him, though; last week, he ran around town, alongside Shipes and Sheldon "Dutch" John (Big Krit's tour manager), while the Mississippi rapper was in NYC. He walked Billboard through one of these days (Tuesday, Dec. 6) while out on K.R.I.T.'s promotional run, all while attending to his other artists in the meantime.
