Big K.R.I.T. seems like he's been a part of the hip-hop scene for much longer than he has. His attention to detail has given him the edge over a long list of up-and-coming artists who believe in quantity over quality. The producer-rapper has never been one to "drop a mixtape" anyway. His first, 2009's 'K.R.I.T. Wuz Here,' and the 2011 sophomore effort, 'ReturnOf4Eva,' are projects in his eyes. Yet, neither was quite a mixtape nor official album. But both showcased his effort in crafting classic material. Signed to Def Jam for two years now, the Mississippi native has been plugging away, working on tracks with everyone from Freddie Gibbs to T.I. 'ReturnOf4Eva' was his first release after being signed and it's been helmed as one of 2011's best mixtapes. He's primed to repeat that success as he readies his '4EvaNADay' project for release next month. K.R.I.T.'s debut LP, 'Live From the Underground,' is next up for release in June and though he sounds confident about what he has planned, the rapper remains tight-lipped about the specifics. He does, however, promise that we'll be getting more of what made us fall in love with his music in the first place. The BoomBox sat down with the man born Justin Scott about producing for his hip-hop colleagues, playing the tuba and his appreciation for Waka Flocka Flame.
Are you aware that you're one of Waka's favorite new artists? He mentioned you excitedly in an interview with us last year and mentioned a track that he had set up for you on his new album, 'Triple F Life: Friends, Fans & Family.' I definitely saw that interview. Yeah, I did [laughs]. I'm definitely gonna work with him but this new project ['4EvaNADay'], doesn't really have any features on it. It's more of a conceptual album. As far as my actual 'Live From The Underground' project dropping, I really can't say who's gonna be on there because I definitely want to keep the mystique. But I'm definitely gonna work with Waka, man. I respect his grind and what he's been able to accomplish, so for him to show love and give me a shout-out in the midst of everything man, I definitely appreciate it.
So you had no idea he was such a big fan. Nah, man. I haven't really had the opportunity to be around him. That was the first that I'd heard and to see it in an interview was just crazy.

In an era when a single's strength is measured in weeks and artists release a lifetime's worth of music in one year, Big K.R.I.T. stand alone. Armed with politically relevant lyrics and peanut butter-smooth production, the Meridian, Mississippi emcee/producer hearkens back to a time in Hip Hop when social commentary and souped-up slabs weren't mutually exclusive topics to be heard on a single song. Regardless of all the accolades he's received in the past twelve months, Krizzle's not likely to let on that he's in line to become of of Hip Hop's next big acts. Even though the 25-year-old rapper has lent his talents to heavyweights like T.I. and The Roots and even placed ahead of rock god Mick Jagger on Rolling Stone's "Top 50 Albums of 2011," he sounds more concerned with the unifying powers of music and standing up for his beliefs.
