Gearing up for his appearance in our home state this weekend via The Norva in Norfolk, Virginia as part of The Smoker's Club tour, we here at Solediction are proud to present an interview with Big K.R.I.T.. The Mississippi rep has been on the music scene since 2005, but really started to get the recognition he deserved this year of 2010 with his latest mixtape K.R.I.T. Wuz Here. Not only is the guy a rapper, but he also has the gifted ability to produce. True fans of hip-hop know that those two combos are deadly when utilized correctly. And you better believe, K.R.I.T. does just that. Quality lyrics matched with soothing beats is what you'll get from this man right here. So if you're a fan of that, which you should be, Krizzle belongs in your ears. Yeah I'm just typing to fill up space, but you get the point. So without further ado, enjoy the short conversation between our own Derek Stephenson and the "King Remembered in Time" himself.
Check out the feature in full after the jump.
Sole: What's up K.R.I.T.?
Big K.R.I.T.: Nothin' much man, just out here enjoying this sun.
Sole: You ready for this interview?
Big K.R.I.T.: Yeah man, hit me with your first question.
Sole: Which one do you prefer, rapping or producing?
Big K.R.I.T.: Man, I dig both a lot, but I really love rapping. I mean instrumentals can only go so far, but actually having lyrics with a message behind it is where it's at.
Sole: How was it growing up in Mississippi?
Big K.R.I.T.: It's a very humbling place. Wisdom was always passed down from my elders. That's where my family is at. I show where I'm from in all my music because I want to show the world that Mississippi isn't full of ignorant negativity.
Sole: Are there any new upcoming projects?
Big K.R.I.T.: In November, I'll be releasing, "Return of 4eva" (The Album). I also have another project with The Alumni which consists of Big Sant and I. We'll be dropping an album soon.
Sole: What is it like working with some of the greats in the game right now?
Big K.R.I.T.: A very beautiful experience. It's really a blessing to be doing this man. We always reach out to each other and always know we're going to make good music.
Sole: What programs do you use when you're on your producing job?
Big K.R.I.T.: I use Reason, ProTools, and The Machine. The Machine is this mpc player I just got. I used to use Fruity Loops a long time ago, a very long time ago. *laughs*
Sole: How did you creep into the industry?
Big K.R.I.T.: Actually, I've been in the game for some time now. I dropped my first mixtape in 2004 then up until now when I recently dropped, "K.R.I.T. Wuz Here", is when I started to get the industry's money and attention.
Sole: In regards to, "K.R.I.T. Wuz Here", what was your favorite track or which one meant a lot to you?
Big K.R.I.T.: I'd have to say, "I Gotta Stay". The reason being is that I lost my grandmother back in January and she really meant a lot to me. She was my bestfriend and I received a lot of valuable messages from her. So, it was that track and also, "Hometown Hero". I feel that I have to do this for Mississippi. Someone had to step to the plate so I did.
Sole: Who else is involved with the Cinematic Music Group?
Big K.R.I.T.: It's Smoke DZA, Nipsey Hussle, and me. That's it for now.
Sole: Will the Smokers Club Tour be your very first and how do you feel about it?
Big K.R.I.T.: Well I just came off tour with Wiz but this will be my first tour with me headlining. This tour has the most dates I've done back to back ever. Other than that, I always have a good time with Spitta and them.
Sole: For the fans who might not know, break down what K.R.I.T. the name itself stands for.
Big K.R.I.T.: King Remembered in Time.
Sole: Who's your favorite rapper of all time, dead or alive?
Big K.R.I.T.:I can't just choose one, I'd have to say Tupac, Biggie, Andre 3000, and Pimp C.
Sole: Alright, to bring this interview to a conclusion, one last question. Due to the fact that some artist like to stay underground, would you ever consider becoming a mainstream rapper?
Big K.R.I.T.: If it happens then it happens. I'm always going to make great music regardless. That actually gives me more of an opportunity to spread my message to to the listeners that haven't heard of me or for the ones that love my music.
Props to Solediction
